In a statement on his campaign website, Sanders said he will run in New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District for a seat now held by Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, a Democrat.
Sanders, 48, is the eighth Democrat to enter the congressional race to replace Democratic Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (N.H.), who now holds the seat but announced in October that she will not seek reelection in 2018. "The decision as to who to vote for will be determined by the people of New Hampshire's first district, and nobody else". Members of the US House must live in the state they are running in, but are not required to live in the district.
Andy Sanborn, a Republican running for the 1st District, slammed Sanders on Tuesday as an "out-of-district socialist" whose views don't align with the state's motto, "Live Free or Die".
Sanders said he is "very proud" of his son's "commitment to public service".
"We need a Medicare For All health care system which guarantees health care to every man, women, and child without out of pocket expenses", Sanders' campaign website says.

Though his father is an independent, Levi Sanders will be the eighth Democratic candidate to enter the New Hampshire race, CNN noted, and his campaign is centered around the working class. The National Republican Congressional Committee said it will compete for the seat and two declared GOP candidates - Andy Martin and Eddie Edwards - have already raised more than $350,000 combined.
Sanders first disclosed his interest in the seat to Vice News last week, saying that he was "just dotting my i's and crossing my t's".
The campaign is something he has discussed with his father, who lost the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination to Hillary Clinton.
A native of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, Levi Sanders is a 1992 graduate of the University of Oregon. Levi Sanders' step-sister, Carina Driscoll, has announced that she is running for mayor of Burlington, Vermont, a post once held by her stepfather.
