Lewis Hamilton leads busy day as Formula One tests resume after snowfall

Alonso was fifth fastest, 1.6secs slower than Hamilton, using the super-soft tyre.

There was another red flag when Max Verstappen spun into the gravel on the 12th turn. McLaren were clearly aiming to put as much mileage on the vehicle as possible today, and Vandoorne did so while still remaining top of the leaderboard until he was deposed by Sergey Sirotkin's Williams as the track dried further.

Times were now improving rapidly and sure enough it wasn't long before we saw the first slick runners of the day, with Nico Hulkenberg and Bottas opting for the dry rubber right around midday.

Indeed, in one of those unusual twists of irony, as Toro Rosso, along with new engine partner Honda, topped the mileage stats, between them Vandoorne and Fernando Alonso, who drove the last couple of hours, just about out-did them, the MCL33 completing 161 laps.

Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne, in the now Renault-powered McLaren after that team's split with Honda at the end of a year ago, did 110 laps and was second quickest although he was using the much faster hyper-soft tyres. We see from there. Other driver swaps for the "afternoon session" included Chalres Leclerc for Ericsson, and Lance Stroll for Sirotkin. Verstappen's gaffe was part of a largely disappointing day for Red Bull Racing.

Due to the cold weather, Hamilton had completed just 25 laps prior to Thursday but made up for lost time on a drying track in the afternoon by adding a further 69 to his total for the first test. Teammate Valtteri Bottas had braved the worst of the conditions in the morning and added a further 60 laps to the 152 he had completed earlier in the week.

Hamilton was eager to get going again, and finally went fastest on the mediums, which could be an ominous sign of things to come.

Mercedes driver Valterri Bottas will not attempt to play any mind games with his team-mate and four-time world champion Lewis Hamilton over the course of the 2018 as he believes it is a waste of energy.

Speaking of good cars, Toro Rosso's vehicle, complete with Honda engine, carried Pierre Gasly to 116 laps, the most of the day. Not many people would have bet on that at the start of the week! "Testing there is no competition and that is what I miss when you have that long, long break you just can't wait to get back to that competitive atmosphere that is Formula 1 - there is nothing quite like it".

Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari, last year's runner-up in the drivers' championship, was third-fastest, almost a second behind world champion Hamilton.

Renault and Williams had solid days and completed over 100 laps each as they both split their running between their two race drivers.

Red Bull again... At 35 laps, Max Verstappen's tally was the lowest of the day, and marked another hard day for Red Bull in what has already been a turbulent week for the Milton Keynes-based outfit. The team have now completed the third fewest laps of testing so far (211), ahead of only Haas and Force India.
