The portrait holds a particular cultural and historical significance for Nigeria: its subject was the grand-daughter of a revered Yoruba leader, while Enwonwu was of the Igbo people - two groups largely on opposing sides of the Nigerian civil war, after the Igbo people attempted to secede under the name of Biafra.
Late Benedict Chukwukadibia Enwonwu's "Tutu" painting has sold for over $1.6 million (N577,600,000).

Earlier this month, we reported on the finding of Ben Enwonwu's masterpiece "Tutu," which had been uncovered in a "modest" London flat, after having gone missing for nearly 25 years.
The work was estimated at less than a quarter of the final bid, but exceeded that estimate at Wednesday's auction, according to CNN.
Leonardo da Vinci's "Salvator Mundi" became the most expensive artwork sold at auction in November 2017, when it went for over $450 million at Christie's in NY.

The paintings grew in fame not only for their beauty but for the mystery surrounding their disappearance. It was Giles Peppiatt, Director of African art at Bonhams, who is being credited with discovering Nigeria's most famous painting. Then one day in December 2017, he finally found the real thing.
He uncovered the work after a family in north London contacted him following lucrative recent sales of Nigerian artworks at auction. "I was absolutely staggered when I first saw the piece", said Peppiatt. When Carter was asked by Lord Carnarvon 'What can you see?', Carter replied 'Wonderful things.
"Tutu" was among 20 Enwonwu artworks made available at the Bonham's sale.
Enwonwu's work "Negritude", also painted in the 1970s, sold for £100,000 (113,000 euros $138,000) in the same sale.
