The New York Times’ obituary of Madhubala notes her tragic life compares her to Marilyn Monroe
On International Women's Day on March 8, The New York Times published obituaries of 15 "remarkable women" and among them was late actress Madhubala, whom they introduced to their readers as: "A Bollywood legend whose tragic life mirrored Marilyn Monroe's".
The newspaper said that in looking back at its archives it found that the "vast majority" of obituaries over the years "chronicled the lives of men, mostly white ones".
The feature introduction explains, "Since 1851 The New York Times has published thousands of obituaries: of heads of state, opera singers, the inventor of Stove Top stuffing and the namer of the Slinky. Yet who gets remembered - and how - inherently involves judgment".
Madhubala started acting at the tender age of nine and featured in several movies like Mughal-e-Azam, Amar, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi among others.
Paying homage to Madhubala, writer, Aisha Khan, wrote, "Madhubala's (born as Mumtaz Begum) tragic turn in the film as an enigmatic young woman in search of love seemed to foreshadow her own glittering but short life".
