No immediate tsunami warning has been issued following Monday night's quake.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from today's quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey said was centered in a remote area of East New Britain province.

The Centre said: "An quake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 occurred in the New Britain region, Papua New Guinea at 11.24 UTC on Saturday March 24". Deeper earthquakes tend to cause less damage on the Earth's surface.

The Pacific Ring of Fire is the most geologically active area in the world, with more than 90 percent of earthquakes occurring there. In PNG, the last major natural disaster was reported earlier in the month, which claimed lives of 55 individuals.
