On Wednesday, the team announced that it has agreed to a one-year deal with free agent Lucas Duda. Jon Heyman of FanRag reported it's worth $3.5 million, and Joel Sherman of the New York Post adding the possibility of incentives pushing Duda's compensation to $5 million.

Duda will likely step right in and immediately become the starting first baseman for the Royals in 2018, helping to fill the void left by Eric Hosmer's departure.

The 32-year-old Duda hit.217 with 30 homers and 64 RBIs last year for the New York Mets and Tampa Bay, which acquired him on July 27. Drafted by the Mets in 2007, he has a.242 with 138 homers and 405 RBIs in eight major league seasons.

To make room for Duda on the roster, the Royals designated outfielder Billy Burns for assignment.

For the Royals sake, and more importantly for Duda's sake, here's hoping this is the lowest moment of his season and not a sign of misfortunes to come.

Even when healthy, Duda only hit.175 in 52 games with the Rays, with his.217 overall batting average a year ago being the worst since his rookie season.

After today's transaction, the Royals have 40 players on their Major League Reserve List. He had 58 extra-base hits and a.496 slugging percentage. A back injury wrecked his 2016 campaign, but Duda had 57 home runs and drove in 165 over the 2014 and 2015 seasons with the Mets and is a viable power hitter.

Due to the slow free agent market, he arrived in camp two weeks after many teammates. We have a nice group of veterans, young talent, some great arms.

Gurriel, 33, hit.299 with 18 homers and 75 RBIs previous year in his first full season in the majors.
