Winter Storm Quinn Named: Heavy Snow Expected in West, Plains and Midwest Into Next Week
With snow totals expected to be measured in feet at the higher elevations, officials warned drivers about the dangers of getting caught in the worst of Winter Storm Quinn as it began to dump heavy snow in northern California.
The California Department of Transportation said 90-miles stretch of Interstate 80 was closed between Colfax, California, and the Nevada state line due to whiteout conditions.
Northern mountains are expected to receive 3 feet (0.9 meter) to 5 feet (1.5 meters) of snow, and up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) in localized areas.
At 1 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said eastbound I-80 traffic was being turned at Alta while westbound traffic was being turned in Truckee.
Travelers were asked to avoid trips to the mountains until the winter storm passed, with up to 7 feet of snow possible in the higher elevations.
A blizzard warning will be in effect along much of the eastern flank of the Sierra starting at midmorning tomorrow.
