Almost six years after being shot in the face and neck by the Taliban for advocating for the rights of girls, 20-year-old Malala Yousafzai returned Thursday to Pakistan, CNN affiliate GEO reported.

Malal was received by government and security officials and escorted as per VIP protocol directly from the airport to the hotel, where she will accommodate during her stay in Pakistan.

Now a celebrated education activist, Malala left Pakistan in 2012 after surviving an assassination attempt by Taliban who attacked her for daring to speak up for the right of girls to attend school in Swat, her hometown.

The Pakistani education activist came to prominence when she was shot in the head in 2012 as she was leaving school in Pakistan's Swat valley, northwest of the country's capital, Islamabad, since then, Malala's advocacy has grown into an worldwide movement and she has become a global celebrity.

During her stay in Pakistan, the 20-year-old, is likely to hold meetings with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, and other important figures.

Since her attack Yousafzai continued to be an impassioned activist fighting for girls to have the right to education anywhere in the world.

At the age of 17, Malala was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her contributions to and struggle for promoting education for children.

Last August, Malala enrolled at the prestigious Oxford University in England.

At just 11, Yousafzai began writing an anonymous diary for BBC Urdu about her life under Taliban rule.
