No. 3 seed Michigan State to open NCAA Tournament vs. No. 14 seed Bucknell in Detroit
Michigan may have been playing the better ball by the end of the season but the committee clearly preferred Michigan State's overall resume as they sent the Spartans to start their tournament run in Detroit. The Big Ten, it seems, can no longer win the big one. For Michigan State fans over the past two decades, there has been little sweating on Selection Sunday. Instead, the Spartans face a short trip and a friendly crowd as they look to make good on this season's expectations.
MI will travel to Wichita, Kansas for its first round matchup against Montana in the West Region.
2006: All six Big Ten teams who made the tournament were eliminated in Week 1. The last time the Big Ten had just four bids was in 2008. The Bison won the regular-season title by four games with a 16-2 league record, and went on to win the tournament championship with wins over Loyola, Boston and Colgate.
The Tar Heels (25-10) open Friday in the West Region against 15-seed Lipscomb in Charlotte. And they no doubt will be motivated after losing in the semifinals of the Big Ten tourney. The Spartans will face No. 14 Bucknell on Friday with the victor advancing to face either No. 6 TCU or No. 11 Arizona State/Syracuse. Wisconsin lost in the Sweet 16.
Houston and San Diego State, the potential third-round matchup (round of 32) are also both top-50 teams. But, let's go with No. 5 Ohio State.
