Continuing the growth momentum auto majors Maruti Suzuki India, Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors on Friday posted robust double-digit growth in their domestic sales for February. Reuters file
This category, which is called "compact" by Maruti, saw an increase of 39% in sales to 65,213 cars sold during February. The auto major's popular entry level hatchback Alto crossed a key 35 lakh sales mark in February. Exports grew 15%, while domestic sales of its SUVs, vans, and commercial vehicles increased 20%.
Maruti Suzuki India, the largest passenger cars maker in India, announced a sold 149,824 units in February 2018, which was 15% higher compared with 130,280 units in February 2017. Growth in the domestic market was also quite impressive, with the numbers reaching 137,900 units compared to the 120,599 units sold during the same month last fiscal year, registering a growth of 13.3 per cent. This was spearheaded by the new-gen Swift which was launched in early February 2018. Exports were up 24.9 per cent at 11,924 units in February 2018 compared with 9,545 units in the same month a year ago, the statement said.
Commercial vehicle sales last month jumped 28 percent to 20,946 units compared to 16,383 units in the same month of 2017.
MSI on Thursday also released its February sales data. Exports saw a decent growth of nearly 48 per cent at 841 units, compared to the 570 units exported in February 2017. We have started the year 2018 on a positive note with a cumulative growth of 11 per cent in the first two months of Jan -Feb 2018.
The company's domestic sales during the month stood at 137,900 units, compared with 120,735 units in February previous year, representing a rise of 14.2%.

The company showed a marginal de-growth in wholesale figures, however, that is majorly due to the drop in exports.
Sales of mini segment cars, including Alto and WagonR, witnessed a 2.1 per cent rise to 33,789 units during the month under review from 33,079 units in February 2017, MSI said. Its domestic sales however, grew 8.43 per cent to 9,041 units as against 8,338 units in the year-ago month.
In the commercial vehicles space, Hinduja Group's flagship Ashok Leyland recorded 29 per cent increase in total sales at 18,181 units in February 2018. The company sold 22,389 units in February 2018 as against 20,717 units in February a year ago.
