MEC drops brands associated with assault weapons manufacturer

Canadian outdoor store bows to pressure on guns

Retailers such as Dick's Sporting Goods have said they won't sell assault rifles any more.

The decision comes amid a rapid trend: Numerous U.S. companies are backing away from deals they have with the National Rifle Association.

"Although Running Room does not sell or condone the sale of firearms or ammunitions like some large multi-branded retailers, we do sell brands that are owned by a corporation that has holdings in the manufacture of assault-style weapons", the Running Room statement reads.

Patti Derbyshire, a marketing professor at Mount Royal University, says that the company's decision to drop Vista Outdoor shows a commitment to its brand and its values.

MEC does not sell guns, but it faced an online petition calling for it to stop selling brands from Vista, which also develops and makes firearms similar to the type of rifle used in a recent USA school shooting.

So, the questions before us are: what can a Canadian retail co-operative with more than five million members, a business that exists to get people active outdoors, do to effect positive change while continuing to ensure that we serve our members' needs? "It wasn't clear cut", Labistour said. "The speed at which this has happened compared to the last big ones has been way faster".

L.L. Bean said in a statement late Thursday that it will no longer sell guns or ammunition to anyone under the age of 21. Walmart ended sales of assault-style rifles in 2015, citing lagging sales.
