A spokeswoman says Trudeau wants to show support for workers in an industry that is facing uncertainty after U.S. President Donald Trump slapped steel and aluminum tariffs on the rest of the world.
The seventh round of Nafta talks ended Monday with some progress on minor issues, and a USA willingness to "compromise".
"Mexico reiterates that the negotiation of NAFTA must not be subject to conditions outside of that process".
"Due to the unique nature of our relationship with Canada and Mexico, we're negotiating right now NAFTA, and we're going to hold off the tariff on those two countries to see whether or not we're able to make the deal on NAFTA", Trump said at the event announcing the tariffs.
"The exemptions aren't a magical favour that was being done (for Canada)", Trudeau said.
The Canadian finance minister-who said he spoke with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin three times in the past week in pushing for an exemption-was asked whether tariffs amount to a sword of Damocles, hanging over Nafta.
