The Big Ten opened a five-day run at the "Mecca of Basketball" with Jordan Bohannon leading Iowa past IL 96-87 on Wednesday night.
Coach Lisa Bluder's 23-6 team faces the victor of Wednesday's game between Wisconsin and Northwestern in a Thursday game scheduled to tip off around 1:15 p.m.at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
Kipper Nichols scored a career-best 31 points for 13th seed IL (14-18), which closed out Underwood's first season with two wins in its final nine games.
It did it in a game that included three stoppages of play because of cuts or splotches blood on players' jerseys, a double foul, several video reviews of hard fouls and IL coach Brad Underwood's first technical foul of the season.
The Hawkeyes slammed the door shut with a Bohannon 3-pointer that brought the lead back to seven with 9:55 to go in the game. "I do know that if we are successful this weekend, we're going to have to beat three really good teams to do it".
Freshman Luka Garza matched Bohannon by scoring 15 points in the second half and he finished with 20. I'll take the Hawkeyes.
"This is my first time being here", said Bohannon, the 6-foot sophomore from Marion, Iowa.
The Buckeyes dealt with a string of three straight losses in late January, the only blemishes on their 16-game conference record, and finished one game ahead of the Terrapins.
The Hawkeyes shot 56.3 percent from the field in the game and made a season-high 34 free throws in 41 attempts, but it wasn't all about offense.

Te'Jon Lucas and Mark Alstork had Bohannon trapped along the sideline, but he somehow slipped the ball between them to Garza for a dunk that clinched the victory with 34.5 seconds remaining. No one else has consistently made a positive impact, though the team's play has ticked up down the stretch.
Probably the biggest statistic was the rebounding.
Iowa dominated the boards, doubling up the Illini 40-20.
"The double bye would have been nice, but we've had a small roster all season and we've learned to deal with it, " Bluder said.
The Hawkeyes now have a quick turnaround before playing again today against a MI team that defeated them twice in the regular season.
