Nothing was coming easily to John Isner over the first three months of this year, and he was essentially a non-factor in every tournament he entered.

Kyrgios, who had reached the Miami semifinals in the previous two years, saw his hopes of at least matching that feat evaporate in the second set after his opponent secured the only break in the fifth game and rode it out for a well-earned win.

American John Isner upset second-seeded Croatian Marin Cilic 7-6 (7-0) 6-3 to book a meeting with South Korean Hyeon Chung, a 6-4 6-3 victor over Portugal's Joao Sousa.

"I know whoever I play it's going to be extremely tough", added Isner. He faced only one break point on Wednesday.

Isner - who ousted second-seeded Marin Cilic this week - will next face either No. 5 seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina or No. 20 Milos Raonic of Canada.

"This whole tournament, after each match I've played I've continued to get stronger", Isner told Sky Sports. "Del Potro is playing the best tennis in the world right now, that can not be argued, and Milos has found his game after a pretty rough 2017 for his standards".

"It's ideal conditions", said Isner, who lost to Novak Djokovic in the 2015 semifinals at Key Biscayne. "Physically there's absolutely no issues for me, I'm playing as well as I have in a very, very long time so very happy to be in the semi-finals and I do believe I can go further".

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. - John Isner's dominant serve has helped propel him into the semifinals of the Miami Open tennis tournament.

He will face Kevin Anderson after the sixth-seeded South African defeated Frances Tiafoe 7-6 (6-3) 6-4 in their round of 16 meeting. Isner is ranked 17th in the world, and Chung is No. 23.

The key to Isner's victory in the match came when he won all seven points in the first-set tiebreaker.
