Alberto Carvalho, the longtime Miami-Dade Schools superintendent tapped on Wednesday to head New York City schools, stunned onlookers in Miami Thursday when he unexpectedly announced that he will turn down the offer.
But after facing tearful community members who begged him to stay during the meeting Thursday morning, an emotional Carvalho reassured Miami-Dade school board members, community leaders and students that he would stay put.
Carvalho sung de Blasio's praises, but eventually announced to loud cheers: "I am breaking an agreement between adults to honor an agreement and pact I have with the children of Miami". There is.never a tiresome moment in our great city", Eric Phillips, press secretary to de Blasio wrote, followed by "Who would ever hire this guy again? Bullet dodged... Who would ever hire this guy again? After hearing from residents of the community and school board, many of whom pleaded with him to stay over, Carvalho rose to speak.
At a late afternoon press conference at City Hall, de Blasio voiced respect for Carvalho's career and accomplishments, while suppressing any irritation at his spurning the chancellor's job.
The city already had reached an agreement to share the news with Politico that Carvahlo was the city's choice, and de Blasio said that at about 5 p.m, Carvalho "confirmed that he was very comfortable giving the information to Politico".
The decision clearly blindsided NY.
In Miami, rumors began swirling on Tuesday that Carvalho had been offered the post.
Carvalho said he spoke to New York Mayor Bill de Blasio to inform him of his decision. With 1.1 million students, NY is the USA's largest school district.

Ahead of the meeting, Carvalho greeted students and parents at iPreparatory Academy, where he named himself principal.
City educators were also buzzing over accusations that Carvalho had an affair with a young reporter a decade ago when he was an assistant superintendent in Miami.
To observers in Miami, the outpouring of support is what finally pushed Carvalho to call de Blasio during the meeting, with a surprising message: thanks, but no thanks. During his tenure, the county graduation rate has risen to 80 percent and he won the National Superintendent of the Year award in 2014. He declined to say anything about New York City, instead railing against the idea of arming Florida teachers.
