U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY A major earthquake struck Papua New Guinea early Sunday morning. No tsunami threat was issued for Hawaii

Papua New Guinea, a country taking up one-half of a large island in Oceania, more particularly located just a handful of miles above the extreme right portion of Australia's Northern coast, was stricken by an natural disaster on Monday, February 25, being reported as an alarmingly-strong 7.5-magnitude force of nature.

PNG's department of geohazard management said more aftershocks were likely, with the largest so far measured at magnitude 5.5.

A statement from the US' Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said: "An Earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 occurred in New Guinea, Papua New Guinea at 1745 UTC on Sunday February 25, 2018".

"The national government has since sent an assessment team to the Southern Highlands to assess the damage".

The quake was recorded 142 km (88 miles) west southwest of the city of Mount Hagen at a depth of about 10 km, according to the USGS website.

The quake also disrupted work at oil and gas plants, mines and coffee plantations.

ExxonMobil said it shut the two LNG processing units, or trains, at its site on the coast near Port Moresby after earlier shutting its Hides gas conditioning plant and Hides production pads in Hela province in the highlands region.

Papua New Guinea is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped area that is frequently shaken by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Papua New Guinea is home to 7 million people on the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, to the east of Indonesia.
