MoviePass CEO backtracks on location tracking statements

Lowe now says that update was made in consultation with Apple and relates to how iOS handles Global Positioning System privacy. In a new interview with Variety, however, Lowe backtracks and says his original comments were "completely inaccurate".

He confirmed that the app only checks the location of the customers when checking for the nearest participating theatre, and when they check in to the theatre, so the app can verify their credit card.

"If you get in your vehicle and drive five miles, we don't know where you are or where you are going", he said.

Lowe made the initial comments, which sparked the outcry at the Entertainment Finance Forum earlier in March, saying, "We watch how you drive from home to the movies. We watch where you go afterwards". We don't sell that data. What do you think of Lowe's remarks? Previously, the app gave users Apple's three standard privacy options: never track; track when using the app; and always track. The open letter notes that MoviePass "does not use and has never used this feature". "When we do that, if we do that, we'll send a request to each customer to let them opt in or opt out", Lowe said, adding that only about "half a dozen" customers canceled the service over privacy concerns.
