Zimbabwe's former leader Robert Mugabe said he never thought new President Emmerson Mnangagwa would turn against him and denounced Mnangagwa's move to oust him a year ago as a coup, in an interview broadcast on Thursday.

Robert Mugabe was ousted in November 2017 after a 30 year career as President of Zimbabwe.

Mawarire said that the attacks on Mugabe were an indication that Zanu-PF wanted to prevent the veteran politician from exposing that his ouster was unconstitutional.

"Some people refused to call it a coup", Mugabe said in the SABC interview.

Mugabe told journalists Thursday in his first press briefing since he was forced out of power in November previous year on the back of a military coup paving the way for Mnangagwa's return and takeover.

The NPF said it was sympathetic to Mugabe, reports said.

"I am willing to discuss and I am willing to assist in that process but I must be invited properly".

Presidential polls are due by the end of August in which Mnangagwa will face his first major electoral test.

Ambrose Mutinhiri, a former brigadier, who was also a cabinet minister, quit the ruling Zanu-PF party recently and formed the NPF party, which has Mugabe's backing.

The country's problems have not been solved by the change in leadership - while many were optimistic after Mr Mugabe resigned, they are disenchanted to see that the authoritarian system in many ways still remains.
