Mummy remains found in sarcophagus previously thought to be empty

"We are about to start a really detailed project to scientifically investigate these remains in the coffin and ask a whole bunch of questions" investigation lead Dr Jamie Fraser said

Reuters reports that the coffin, which was acquired by the University of Sydney 150 years ago, was erroneously classified.

Their error was only discovered by chance late previous year when more recent academics removed the lid to the coffin and discovered the tattered remains of a mummy. The truth didn't come out until past year, when researchers opened up the ancient artifact and saw what was inside.

"It was just unbelievably astonishing what we saw - one of those moments where you can't help but take a breath and just hang in the moment", said Archaeologist Dr. Jamie Fraser, who works from the campus museum.

"I've never excavated an Egyptian tomb, but this comes close".

The coffin belonged to Mer-Neith-it-es, according to hieroglyphs on the lid name.

Egyptian antique sellers commonly discard the remains from the original coffin to resell.

The coffin and its contents have already been laser-scanned to create 3D modelling, and then sent for a detailed Computed tomography scans, which were finished on Friday.

Radiologist Professor John Magnussen said despite the remains being disturbed, there are still enough clues to solve part of the mystery.

LA Attorney General to release decision on shooting death of Alton Sterling
At issue in the investigation was whether Sterling was reaching for the weapon, as officers claimed, when he was shot and killed. The officers' body cameras and a store surveillance camera also recorded the encounter, but those videos have not been released.

Australia expels two Russian diplomats over United Kingdom nerve agent attack
Other non-EU countries to also have expelled diplomats include the United States, Canada, Ukraine, Albania and Australia. The White House branded it a "brazen action" and said the move to expel 60 Russians would make the country safer.

"We know from the hieroglyphs that Mer-Neith-it-es worked in the Temple of Sekhmet, the lion-headed goddess", Fraser said.

The scan also revealed that the feet and ankle bones were largely intact. She said that she hopes to find toenails as they are one of the best indications for carbon dating.

"In fact, by doing this process of excavation we can stabilise the remains and conserve them properly".

During the physical examination, Dr Lord made another important discovery - the resin poured into the mummy's skull after its brain was removed.

Another interesting discovery made by Egyptologist Connie Lord was the similarity between the cast and the one found in the coffin of Egypt's most famous mummy - Tutankhamun.

"It could tell us so much", Dr Lord said.

"It would have to be incredibly rare".

But the artefacts inside this coffin are in desperate need of preservation. It's believed that the remains came from a single person who was at least 30 years old.
