Drag racer killed after crashing into wall at 100 mph

A 75-year-old street racer died earlier today at the Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma when the racer's vehicle hit a wall, track officials said.

An unnamed 75-year-old man from Napa County was killed Wednesday night at Sonoma Raceway in California, when his 1976 Ford Pinto crashed at over 100 miles per hour, as reported by NBC Bay Area.

The Sonoma Raceway reports, since the program started 30 years ago, this is the first time someone has died while drag racing.

The participant was racing his 1976 Ford Pinto on the facility's quarter-mile drag strip. About 6 p.m., he crossed the finish line and apparently braked but his vehicle veered left and collided with a k-rail at more than 100 miles per hour, Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Crum said in a news release.

It was, according to a raceway spokeswoman, the first fatality on the track in the history of the program and he was the only driver to have been involved in the incident.

The event had been canceled the previous two Wednesdays by rain.
