Defense Secretary James Mattis issued a statement on Tuesday celebrating NATO's expulsion of diplomats in Russia's mission to the alliance, saying it proves that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is still relevant in stepping forward with such expulsions.

Almost 150 suspected Russian spies have so far been expelled, including 23 dispatched by Britain. Foreign Minister Simon Coveney called the nerve-agent attack on Skripal and his daughter a "shocking and abhorrent" use of chemical weapons.

Ireland also announced it was ordering one Russian diplomat to leave.

Poland and the three Baltic states seem poised to expel Russian diplomats over the poisoning of an ex-Russian spy in Britain earlier this month, based on Russian news reports and diplomatic sources on Monday.

Moscow has denied any involvement in the incident. Moscow has promised retaliation for the diplomatic expulsions.

"We know for certain that this is a result of colossal pressure and colossal blackmail, which is Washington's chief instrument in the worldwide scene", Lavrov said.

"Today's actions by our allies clearly demonstrate that we all stand shoulder to shoulder in sending the strongest signal to the Kremlin that Russian Federation can not continue to flout worldwide law and threaten our security".

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told the RIA Novosti news agency on Tuesday that Russia was disappointed by the USA announcement that it would expel 60 Russian diplomats and shut down a Russian consulate in Seattle.

Trump on Tuesday discussed the spy attack with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron, the White House said, and expressed "support for the West's strong response". Slovakia also said it would not be taking any steps to expel diplomats now, but that it was summoning the Russian ambassador "without delay", adding that the development of the situation would influence the country's next steps.

Over 100 Russian diplomats have been removed, the biggest western expulsion of Russian diplomats since the height of the Cold War.

Moscow is calling the expulsion of Russian diplomats a "mistake", and is expected to issue a response to the growing show of solidarity with the U.K. CGTN's Dan Ashby has more from Moscow.
