Billy Graham funeral: Evangelist's children carry on crusade

President Trump touches the casket of the Rev. Billy Graham, who died last week at age 99, during a ceremony in the Capitol rotunda on Wednesday.

Graham's body will be taken to Washington on Wednesday and Thursday to lie in honor at the U.S. Capitol.

Dozens of Graham's family members attended the service, which featured speeches by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan.

Graham had personal audiences with many sitting United States presidents from Harry S. Truman to Barack Obama.

Graham is the first religious leader and only the fourth private citizen to receive the honor of lying in the Capitol's Rotunda, which traditionally accommodated military officers or elected public officials, including 11 USA presidents.

Billy Graham is only the fourth private citizen to lie in honour at the Capitol, the first since Rosa Parks did so in 2005. Graham was born in Charlotte, North Carolina and died February 21. Graham's son, Franklin Graham, tweeted that the time in Washingon was very special for the family.

Asked what Graham's ultimate legacy will be, Bell said that "because of his integrity and his strong preaching of the gospel, wherever he was, whether he was in the presence of the president or whether he was with ordinary native people in their huts, he was the same".

Billy Graham's 12 grandsons will serve as pallbearers at his funeral.

U.S. Rep. Bruce Westerman, a Republican from Hot Springs, described Graham as "one of the great men of this country". "Someday people are going to see Billy Graham Parkway and wonder who was Billy Graham, but I think that's a long way off".

Trump said the "ambassador for Christ, who reminded the world of the power of prayer and the gift of God's grace, carried his message around the world, but his heart, as Franklin will tell you, and was always in America".

The minister will be buried next to his wife, Ruth, on the property.

The Scripture reading and invocation will come from the Rev. Donald Wilton, senior pastor at First Baptist Church of Spartanburg. "In that little room, he was the same person I saw when I was 11 on that football field", Clinton said Tuesday after viewing the casket at Graham's home.

Billy Graham will return "home", where he will be laid to rest Friday. If Graham's 95th birthday at Asheville's Grove Park Inn is any clue, other guests could include former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, media mogul Rupert Murdoch, TV host Kathie Lee Gifford and former N.C. Gov.
