NC unemployment rate stuck again in January at 4.5 percent

- Job growth in Kansas was flat in January as the state's economy added only 200 net new jobs, even though employers are still looking to fill thousands of positions, the state Department of Labor reported Monday. "The state's employers are looking to hire the 51,000 job seekers". The unemployment rate of 3 percent is up slightly from 2.8 percent a year ago.

North Carolina's unemployment rate in January didn't move from the 4.5 percent mark where it's been for three previous months.

The District's rate in January was 5.8 percent, down from 5.9 percent in December, and down from 6.0 percent in January 2017.

The department says the January rate also remained well below the US rate, which was unchanged at 4.1 percent. Leisure and hospitality gained 4,900 jobs and employment in manufacturing also rose.

Six of the 11 employment sectors saw job losses in January compared to the year before, with the steepest losses coming from construction, which slipped 2,700 jobs, and trade, transportation and utilities, which fell by 8,800 jobs. With the exception of one month when it was equal (October 2014), Indiana's unemployment rate now has been below the US rate for more than four years.

In February, the US economy added 313,000 new payroll jobs, the biggest single monthly increase since July 2016.
