Netflix plans to produce 700 original shows and movies in 2018
Netflix's original content includes shows and movies from outside of the USA, of which there are 80 original non-US productions (like Dark mentioned above).
It appears that 2018 will be a big year for Netflix in the original programming area. But in March alone, the streaming service is debuting 54 (!) original TV shows and movies. At the beginning of the year, Netflix announced it was planning to release 80 films in 2018. Wells said of the increased spend: "We used to think every incremental dollar was spent on content" but extra money will be pooled into marketing because "we think marketing is a multiplier on the content spend".

That all makes sense - even if we already feel winded from just the idea of sifting through several hundreds more shows before finally finding a decent one to binge. But Wells did mention how they would be using a good portion of these funds for global Netflix programs, like their German hit Dark. "We don't necessarily have to do it ourselves", he explained. Content is what is driving up Netflix's subscription base - up to 117.6 million members worldwide in 2017 - and what is pushing the streaming service to partner with acclaimed filmmmakers and TV producers.
