First Black Canadian Woman To Be Put On Currency
"The Guardian reports", Civil rights pioneer Viola Desmond was selected from the more than 26,000 submissions that rolled in after the Bank of Canada announced plans to put a Canadian woman on the country's circulating currency for the first time". "Hers is a story that all Canadians need to know and one that we are honoured to share".
As well as the image of the outside of the CMHR, the back of the bill also includes an excerpt from the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and an eagle feather representing the continuing struggle for recognition of the rights of Canada's Indigenous people.
"It's an important story because it shows that standing up for what we believe, whether it's on the steps of Parliament Hill or in a movie theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, can make our country and our world a better place for future generations", the Governor said.
This new $10 note continues a strong tradition of innovation by the Bank of Canada to ensure that Canadians maintain trust and confidence in their money.
Viola Desmond was born in 1914 and found success as an entrepreneur, selling her own line of skin and hair products, a huge feat during a time when very few businesses or banks would associate with a black person.

The new $10 will be printed on polymer, which was introduced to Canadian bank notes in 2011.
"Our bank notes are designed not only to be a secure and durable means of payment, but also to be works of art that tell the stories of Canada". "Our family will go down in history..."
The note was officially unveiled by Stephen Poloz, Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Honourable Bill Morneau, Minister of Finance, at a ceremony in Halifax, Nova Scotia. "Canadians can use this note with both confidence and pride".
A spokesperson from the Bank of Canada tells CBC News the new bill won't be added to circulation until late 2018. In due course, the Bank will launch another consultation process to seek input from Canadians on the design of the next $5 note. The $20 denomination will continue to feature the reigning monarch.
