From what Shurmur and Gettleman said on Wednesday, they may be leaning towards passing on a quarterback at No. 2 overall.

The Giants can still target a quarterback with the No. 2 pick in the draft if they want and let him learn behind Manning for a year or two.

The following year, the Cowboys drafted Ezekiel Elliott with the fourth overall pick; last year, both the Jaguars and Panthers took running backs with their first picks. He's the best player in the draft but running backs rarely get drafted as high as second overall.

The safer pick may be taking a player who can make an immediate impact on the team in 2018. Plain and simple. So if someone makes me an offer I can't refuse, would I move back? Well, Shurmur is a fan of running backs, especially guys who can do it all like Saquon Barkley.

"I'm preparing myself to not play football ever again", Casillas said.

The question, assuming the Giants do stay put at No. 2, is who fits that descriptor of "Hall of Fame" worthy? With Gettleman and Shurmur doubling down on Eli Manning, 37, having "years left" in his career, and Shurmur lauding Davis Webb's work ethic this offseason, the Giants' focus with the second overall pick easily could become more about improving the team around Manning rather than planning for life after him.

"You want to know the why - you always got to get to the why, and eventually we'll get to that". "I'm always gonna tell you guys, contracts get done when they're supposed to get done".

"One of the things we've got to get better at is catching the football", Shurmur said.

"I do not talk about contracts or negotiations", Gettleman said. So what would it take for them to take a quarterback at No. 2 in the draft and have him be No. 2 on their depth chart? Trading back in the draft is an option.

Shurmur obviously referenced two Giants defensive greats in Taylor and Banks, and the Giants are aware there are some defensive studs in this class, too, led by N.C. State defensive end Bradley Chubb, Virginia Tech linebacker Tremaine Edmunds and Alabama safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Not just this year's draft, but any draft? "Then you make that determination and move forward".

It's clear that the Giants, who averaged a No. 25 rank in rushing yards in the five seasons since Gettleman's first stint in their front office, desperately need to infuse juice in their run game as part of the plan to maximize Manning. "It's all about accumulating talent".

"When you're looking at the second player in the draft like we are, the first thing we have to determine is, is this guy worthy of being the second pick of any draft - not just this year's draft?" he said.
