Nonsmokers think their co-workers smoke breaks aren't fair, survey says

Non-Smokers Want Extra Free Days To Compensate For Smokers Daily Cigarette Breaks

Many American workers who don't smoke feel they should get extra vacation days to match the time co-workers who smokers spend on smoke breaks, a new survey finds.

Many workers say they should.

But a survey done by e-cigarette maker Halo suggests there's a big divide in the workforce over the fairness of allowing some staff members to stand on the street and smoke while others remain at their desk working.

As far as smokers giving up their smoke breaks?

Twenty-eight percent of smokers also felt that nonsmokers should be given three to five extra vacation days. More smokers (over 16%) than nonsmokers (nearly 14%) indicated nonsmokers should receive seven days or more of additional vacation time.

Almost 42 percent of nonsmokers said they should get between three and five additional vacation days each year, and 28 percent of smokers agree with them.

Are cigarettes really causing a work productivity issue?

The study also revealed that smokers who work in retail, insurance, finance, and tech are taking cigarette breaks that sum up to approximately 20 days, each year.

Things being what they are, what might it take to motivate smokers to surrender the territory at work?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 37.8 million people in the USA - or 15.5 percent of the population - smoke cigarettes. Women would quit for an extra 11 days off, while men would quit for an extra 12 days of leisure. Despite health concerns, lost productivity, and general time wasted, many Americans believed companies should offer incentives for employees to quit smoking. The complete findings can be found here. Ultimately, 82% of employees across all industries agreed that incentives to quit were a good idea.

The company surveyed over 1,000 people. Fifty-one percent of participants identified as female, while 49% identified as male. Participants were excluded if they were not paying attention (such as failing the attention check question or entering obviously inconsistent data). Hypotheses were then statistically tested.
