North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho will arrive in Stockholm early on Thursday evening
North Korea's foreign minister held talks with Swedish officials on Friday amid reports the Scandinavian nation could help pave the way for a proposed summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un.
A Swedish Foreign Ministry spokesman said Ri Yong Ho was in Stockholm to discuss with Swedish counterpart Margot Wallstrom the security situation on the Korean peninsula and Sweden's diplomatic representation of the United States in North Korea.
Sweden has long-standing ties with North Korea.
Sweden acts as diplomatic representative in North Korea for the United States, which has no embassy there, and has helped with the release of US citizens held by the reclusive state.
North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho has visited with top Swedish officials. The newspaper Dagens Nyheter said the talks would not include American or South Korean officials, but added that the United States and South Korea had been involved in preparations for the talks with Mr. Ri. "What I hope comes out of the summit is that President Trump and Kim Jong Un paint a broad brush of the framework of where we need to go, agree on some principles and agree to kick off a process". "They will also address the security situation on the Korean peninsula, which is high on the (UN) Security Council agenda", a ministry statement said. Sweden is now a non-permanent member of the Security Council. "The aim of the visit is to contribute to the effective implementation of the resolutions", the ministry said.
Lofven told local media that his government is willing to help "if the main actors want Sweden to play a role".
Choe most recently appeared as part of a North Korea delegation to South Korea to attend the closing ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
