Flanked by lawmakers and parents of victims of the February 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Scott said the pressure put on lawmakers by students from the school, who met with lawmakers and rallied at the Capitol, was essential in getting the bill passed.

Governor Scott signed the state's first gun control measures in 22 years Friday. "There are just no words".

Retired prosecutor and Florida law professor Bob Dekle sees no legal issue with raising the rifle-purchase age to 21, saying, the framers of the Constitution intended for 21 to be "the age of being adult".

"We filed a lawsuit against the state for violating the constitutional rights of 18 to 21 year olds", said Marion Hammer, lobbyist for the NRA in Florida. Anyone under 21 who buys a firearm in violation of the ban faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.

Florida lawmakers approved the legislation earlier this week with the state House voting 67-50 to approve the bill and the state Senate passing it by a 20-18 vote. He praised the Legislature, contrasting its quick action with what he called the inefficiency of the federal government in Washington.

"I understand the angst about the guardian program but I can't help but think about the coaches who literally ran in as shields to protect their students. while guys with guns were standing outside", said Republican member Chris Latvala. "I'm on a mission to make sure I'm the last dad to ever read a statement of this kind". Trump also said the White House is working on a plan to ban bump stocks, and efforts to enhance background checks were "moving along well" in Congress.

Also in the bill is funding for an optional program to allow some school personnel - like librarians and coaches, but not teachers - to carry firearms on campus.

According to the president's Twitter account, he has been using the adjective to refer to the NBC host since at least 2011. Todd wasn't the only journalist Trump targeted during the rally for GOP congressional candidate Rick Saccone on Saturday.

South Africa make serious inroads

The Viola captain and Italy worldwide died in his sleep last Saturday, which led to an outpouring of grief from the football community.

The bill signed Friday falls short of what Scott and the shooting's survivors wanted.

"When it comes to preventing future acts of horrific school violence, this is beginning of the journey", the statement said. Stoneman students themselves and, according to recent polls, the majority of Floridians do not back more guns in school. It includes $400 million for school security and mental health programs.

Bump stocks, which allow guns to mimic fully automatic fire, have been banned. The group has been heavily scrutinized since the deadly mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.

Given Florida's sorry history and Republican control of the legislature, it is not surprising - albeit still disappointing - that lawmakers were unwilling to meet some of the bolder demands of the Parkland students, including a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Governor Scott signed the bill surrounded by Parkland students and families. "When it becomes law, things will start changing", said Galvano. It also creates a so-called "guardian" program that enables teachers and other school employees in participating districts to carry handguns if they complete law enforcement training.

Broward County teachers union President Anna Fusco met with Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera and let him know that teachers support the school safety bill, but don't like the provision that allows school employees and some teachers to carry guns after receiving law enforcement training.

She said she wants Scott to veto the money for the guardian program when he receives the budget.
