While Katy Perry was promoting the release of her comeback album previous year, with revelatory interviews and a flamboyant performance at Glastonbury Festival.

Sister Catherine previously spoke out against selling the property to the Roar hitmaker, insisting that Perry was the wrong person to maintain the convent's legacy.

They had hoped to sell the property for a whopping US$15.5 million to restaurateur Dana Hollister in 2015, who had plans to convert it into a hotel. A court ordered Hollister to pay back $15 million in legal fees to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and to Perry's company, The Bird Nest, LLC. A judge ruled in the archdiocese's favour in 2016, enabling Perry to continue the purchase.

In a statement following her death, Archbishop Jose Gomez of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles said he was sad to hear of the sister's death and that he had offered a Mass for the repose of her soul.

Perry originally made an offer of $14 million to buy the convent to become her new private residence in 2014, but the nuns blocked the sale after researching her "public image", rejecting Perry "for what should be obvious reasons coming from Catholic nuns".

"You have stolen the property of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart".

Yet, the nuns believe the property is theirs and say they have official documentation to prove it. They said the Vatican controls their convent and appealed the sale directly to Pope Francis. "It's in writing and it says if there are any disputes, they are to be settled in Rome", says Callanan.

Sister Catherine Rose Holzman, one of two aging nuns who were fighting the sale of the 8-acre (3-hectare) convent, died on Friday during related legal proceedings in Los Angeles County Court, Fox affiliate KTTV reported. "On behalf of the entire family of God here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, I pray that God grant her eternal rest and let his perpetual light shine upon her", he added. "It's not doing anyone any good except hurting a lot of people", according to the TMZ.
