Murder trial begins for former Manhattan nanny

The trusted protector had worked for Marina and Kevin Krim for about two years when she was reportedly found trying to slit her own throat as the children lay dead in the bathtub.

"It was a scream you can't imagine is even inside of you", she said.

In court for opening testimony this week, Marina Krim described the horror of discovering her bloodied children, 2-year-old Leo and 6-year-old Lucia, dead of stab wounds when she entered her Manhattan home on October 25, 2012.

The 56-year-old nanny confessed to the murders in subsequent hospital interviews, saying the "devil" made her do it. "Not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect".

She rushed inside and started checking every room, thinking, "it's like a total horror movie", Krim testified.

"We're gonna handle this the way we've handled everything", said Marina Krim. Krim said she wanted to get a good look at the woman.

"I was destroyed", Marina Krim said on the stand. The injuries were so severe, that responding paramedics had thought the two had been decapitated.

Leo was so covered in blood, the officer who removed him from the bathtub feared Leo might slip from his grasp, Groves said. She returned to the lobby and asked the doorman if he had seen her children leave.

NYPD homicide detectives met Kevin Krim, who had been flying back from a business trip in California that day, was met by New York City police homicide detectives at the airport, Groves said. The defense, meanwhile, is aiming to prove that Ortega suffered from untreated mental illness for most of her life. The judge was ultimately not persuaded, but it was still a key component of Van Leer-Greenberg's opening statement.

Senate Intel Committee Finds House Intel GOPers Leaked Warner Texts
Burr and Warner told the Times in a joint statement that they did meet with Ryan but did not request any specific action. Taken together, the actions suggested a pattern of partisanship and unilateral action by the once-bipartisan House panel.

"You are a liar", she said. "Do listen to the medical experts". "And I see Leo and they have blood on them...blood all over Lulu's little dress", she said.

As the murdered children's mother, Marina Krim, headed to the stand to testify, she was clearly emotionally distraught.

The prosecutor said it would never be known why Ortega killed the children, suggesting that she may have been stressed by her son's arrival, the loss of her own apartment and boiled over with resentment about working for the Krims.

As soon as her son came, Ortega's stress and anxiety mounted, and the financial strain of her son's private school tuition "weighed heavily" on Ortega, Groves said.

Rather than counter the evidence of Ortega's role in the killings, defense attorneys argued she was suffering from depression, hearing voices, disassociating from reality and experiencing hallucinations.

Ortega is pursuing an insanity defense and has forced the Krim family to relive the ordeal at trial.

But Van Leer-Greenberg said the rantings of a "delirious medicated person" shouldn't be relied upon to determine a motive.

According to the court documents, Yoselyn Ortega, who has been employed by the Krim family back in 2009 to care for their children, Leo Krim, aged 2, Lucia Krim, aged 6, and another young girl. Years after the deaths, Krim wrote a post about her experience. His essay appeared in Option B, a website started by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, whose husband died unexpectedly in 2015. "Leo was too small to struggle".
