The Oakland A's are making an offer to buy the entire Oakland Coliseum site, but are not ready to commit to building a new ballpark there.

The city of Oakland and Alameda County now co-own the venue.

The Oakland Athletics publicly announced their desire for full owernership of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on Monday.

The Coliseum, the team's current home, was one of three sites under consideration for a new privately financed ballpark.

The request comes after the A's were denied their preferred site for a new ballpark, near the offices of the Peralta Community College District, when the Peralta board of trustees directed the chancellor in December to end talks with the team.

Kaval wrote that the A's seek to purchase the complex, which is jointly owned by the city of Oakland and Alameda County and also includes Oracle Arena, by paying all remaining debt service on the more than $135 million in debt owed by the two municipalities.

The Warriors and Raiders will both leave the site within the next few years, leaving the A's as the only tenants. That should free up a lot of land for eventual redevelopment, meaning that in any case the future of the site is going to be the subject of considerable discussion.
