The 17-year-old Ahed Tamimi became a hero to oppressed Palestinians after a footage emerged showing the girl hitting the soldiers at the entrance to her home in the village of Nabi Saleh in the occupied West Bank.

Ahed was arrested in the middle of the night at her home in the occupied West Bank village of Nabi Saleh on December 19.

Tamimi was 16 at the time of the offence.

"There is no justice under occupation".

The conviction rate in Israel's military courts in the West Bank is nearly 100% - not because the military prosecution is so efficient, but because Palestinian defendants reluctantly sign plea bargains in which they plead guilty.

Her mother and cousin also reached plea deals, receiving eight months and 16 days, respectively.

USA president Donald Trump has said that reaching a final status peace arrangement between Israelis and Palestinians would be the "deal of the century".

Tamimi's case drew global attention.

"The occupation forces continued in their policy of arrest of Palestinian children, denying protection due to them by more than 27 global conventions", according to a report by the Palestinian human rights organization Addameer.

Some compared Tamimi's sentence to that of an IDF soldier who was captured on video in 2016 fatally shooting an injured Palestinian man in what was described by one United Nations expert as an "extrajudicial execution".

Ahmad Awad, whose son, Samir, was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers, stands outside Ramle Magistrate's Court, September 22, 2016.

Both Tamimi and her mother, Nariman Tamimi, have been held in jail for three months, and they will serve an additional five months as part of plea agreements, NPR's Daniel Estrin reports. "They sign it [the confession] so they can resume their normal lives as soon as possible after serving the prison sentence set out in the plea bargain".

"The continued imprisonment of Palestinian child activist Ahed Tamimi is a flagrant attempt to intimidate those who dare challenge the circumstances of the ongoing occupation", Amnesty International said.

In Israel, many have praised the restraint of the two soldiers and accused her family of using their daughter as a pawn in filmed provocations.

"The honor of Israel's army can not be trampled", Israeli Culture Minister Miri Regev said on her Facebook page after the incident.

"During this period, 562 Palestinian children and minors were arrested from all over the West Bank and East Jerusalem", the report said.

Israel disputes that its settlements are illegal and says their future should be determined in peace talks with the Palestinians. Negotiations collapsed in 2014 and efforts by the White House to restart them have shown little progress.

"The Israeli authorities must stop responding to relatively small acts of defiance with such disproportionately harsh punishments".
