Over-60s warned not to eat rockmelon following deadly outbreak

Listeria Outbreak Linked to Rockmelons

These instructions from the NSW Food Authority, which apply to all Australians, follow a bacteria outbreak that killed two people, prompting a nationwide trade recall of the fruit.

However, she said that for vulnerable people, such as those who are over 70, pregnant, or have diabetes, cancer or suppressed immune systems, it can be extremely serious or even life-threatening.

Two of the six in NSW who became ill subsequently died, a NSW Health spokeswoman confirmed.

Following the meeting, growers now supplying rockmelon were asked to supply evidence their fruit was uncontaminated, association industry development manager Dianne Fullelove said.

The company has since ceased production, with Riverina residents who've recently bought rockmelon are being advised to throw it away.

A national outbreak of listeria has reportedly been traced back to rockmelons from a farm in Nericon, with 10 elderly people across three states affected so far. "People vulnerable to listeriosis should discard any rockmelon purchased before 1 March".

Eating foods that contain listeria bacteria does not cause illness in most people.

Australians should ditch any rockmelons they have at home, particularly if they are at a high risk of being affected by listeria.

Symptoms include fever, chills, muscle aches, nausea and sometimes diarrhoea, and can appear within a few days or even up to six weeks after consuming contaminated produce.

The Food Authority has also confirmed rockmelon now available is safe to consume and is not affected by the outbreak.

The infection is particularly unsafe to the elderly, pregnant women and people who have underlying health conditions such as cancer, diabetes, heart and kidney disease. People at risk should consult their local doctor as early as possible should symptoms appear.

In addition to contaminated rockmelon, those most at risk of contracting listeriosis have been warned to avoid pre-cut melons, pre-packed cold salads, deli meats and chickens, raw seafood, soft cheeses, raw mushrooms and unpasteurised milk products.
