Confusion abounded last week, after several media reports suggested that a decision had been made to place Pakistan on the grey list, prompting FO spokesman Mohammad Faisal to say that the outcome of the FATF meeting was "awaited".

The extensive bilateral talks began afterwards to find a common ground, but the National Security Strategy document unveiled by the U.S., the Trump's New Year tweet, the suspension of military aid and the United States move to get Pakistan to the FATF grey list, left little doubt that the talks have failed to fix the strains.

The meeting comes in the backdrop of a number of frosty moves by Washington, the latest being at the just concluded meeting of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) in Paris, where the United States used all sorts of diplomatic manoeuvring to include Pakistan's name in the grey list.

After days of rampant speculation, Pakistan today confirmed that the country is set to be placed on the Financial Action Task Force's terror financing watchlist in June this year, the Dawn reported.

According to APP, Ms Curtis later called on Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal but what was conveyed by the USA official during the meeting was not made public either.

Pakistan, for the record, has received a three-month reprieve from the FATF. "Through their communications, they re reporting to us some of the actions that they are taking on the ground".

The move was backed by Pakistan's traditional allies Saudi Arabia and China, causing consternation in Islamabad as the de facto finance minister accused Washington of trying to "embarrass" his country. "Curtis urged the government of Pakistan to address the continuing presence of the Haqqani network and other terrorist groups within its territory, and reiterated the worldwide community's long-standing concern about ongoing deficiencies in Pakistan's implementation of its anti-money laundering/ counter-terrorism finance regime", the embassy said in statement.

The adviser said that peace in Afghanistan was essential for peace in Pakistan. "I have been forewarning the state in my writings and talks that we need to bring our internal policies and laws in accordance with International Law obligations", says expert on International Law, Ahmer Bilal Soofi.
