Nearly half of US arms exports go to the Middle East
The United States has strengthened its position as the world's leading exporter of weapons over the past five years, providing about a third of the world's arms supplies. Earlier this year, the German government said it would stop approving arms exports to anyone participating in the war in Yemen. Together, these five countries account for 74% of arms supplies around the world.
China is the fifth biggest arms supplier in the world and also supplies the most weapons to India's neighbours, a study by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has shown.
SIPRI said US arms exports increased by 25 percent in the 2013-2017 period, compared with 2008-2012.
"The flow of arms to the Asia and Oceania and the Middle East increased between 2008-2012 and 2013-2017, while there was a decrease in the flow to the Americas, Africa and Europe", the SIPRI said in its report - titled Trends in International Arms Transfers 2017.
"This development is part of the growing strategic partnership between the two countries under which the US has begun to supply India with advanced military equipment", the report said.

Around 35% of China's arms supplies went to Pakistan between 2013 and 2017, followed by 19% to Bangladesh.
India remained the world's largest arms importer between 2013 and 2017, accounting for almost 12% of the global imports whereas its arch-rival Pakistan's military purchase dropped by 36% in the same period. This was "due to United States perceptions that Pakistan was not fully committed to combating the Taliban", the report said. Its arms exports rose by 38 per cent between 2008-12 and 2013-17.
According to details, Pakistan accounted for 2.7pc of global arms imports during the aforementioned period.
The report noted that Russian export of major weapons saw a decrease of 7.1 percent during the same period of time due to lower deliveries to its main recipients.
In 2013-17 Saudi Arabia was the world's second largest arms importer, with arms imports increasing by 225 per cent compared with 2008-12. "Arms imports by states in the region increased by 103 per cent between 2008-12 and 2013-17, and accounted for 32 percent of global arms imports in 2013-17", the report said. "The United Arab Emirates was the fourth largest importer in 2013-17, while Qatar (the 20th largest arms importer) increased its arms imports and signed several major deals in that period", SIPRI said.
