While investigators still have not officially announced whether the crash was a bad accident or a deliberate act, neighbors had recently developed concerns about the health and well-being of the Hart kids and reported them to authorities.
Accident-reconstruction experts said investigators would look at road conditions along with such possibilities as brake failure or a blown tire.
But as the investigation continues, it seems there may have been abuse within the household.
Jennifer and Sarah Hart were found dead Monday (Mar. 26) in Northern California when their vehicle veered off a cliff and onto the Pacific Ocean shoreline.
An ocean search effort is underway for the couple's other three children, 12-year-old Sierra Hart, 16-year-old Hannah Hart and 15-year-old Devonte Hart. And the coroner is investigating the cause of death of the five recovered family members. The Clark County Sheriff's Office confirmed the visit happened because of reports that the children weren't being fed.
Max Ribner, who has known the family since 2012, said allegations from neighbors don't square with what he knows about the Harts.
Then, last week, Bruce and Dana DeKalb, next-door neighbours of the Harts in Woodland, Washington, called state child protective services saying Devonte had been coming over to their house nearly every day for a week, asking for food.
"Very private - they kept to themselves", Groner said.
The six adopted kids were all homeschooled. Kirsty added: "Amy and Connor did not just get on with their life, they went out of their way to thank the Neonatal Units and to show their support by setting up a non-profit organisation to raise money for Neonatal Units and to support families and friends, called Campbellinas".
