The self-promoting "Pharma Bro" vilified for jacking up the price of a lifesaving drug has been sentenced to prison for securities fraud. "I know what it means to tell the truth and what it means to lie".
Judge Matsumoto said before imposing her sentence that she believed Shkreli was genuinely remorseful and that the letters written by family, friends and acquaintances had helped her understand him more fully.
Ex-US pharmaceutical executive and hedge fund manager Martin Shkreli will now spend the next 7-years behind bars.
Last year, Shkreli was convicted of two counts of securities fraud as well as another count of attempting securities fraud. "This case is not about Mr. Shkreli's self-cultivated public persona ... nor his controversial statements about politics or culture", Matsumoto said. And she quoted one piece of correspondence in which he wrote: "F-- the feds".
Shkreli had already been ordered to hand over $7.4 million in assets, including a one-of-a-kind Wu Tang Clan album he bought for $2 million.
Shkreli's defense attorney, Benjamin Brafman, acknowledged Friday that his client could be hard at times.
His lawyer Benjamin Brafman said, "There are times when I want to hug him and then when I want to punch him". "He's not a teenager who just needs some mentoring".

Shkreli, born in Brooklyn to Albanian immigrant parents, became known as the "Pharma Bro" in September 2015 after founding Turing Pharmaceuticals, buying the anti-parasitic drug Daraprim and raising its price by 5,000% to $750 per pill.
During the course of the trial, Shkreli was removed from Twitter for harassing a journalist for Teen Vogue magazine.
It also kicked off a closer look at drug prices on Capitol Hill. Afterward, he tweeted that the lawmakers were "imbeciles". He said profits will be used to improve the drug. In September a year ago, he took to social media to offer $5,000 for a strand of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's hair, a statement Matsumoto saw as a threat and ordered Shkreli to be placed in jail until he was sentenced. And she noted that Shkreli's family and friends "state, nearly universally, that he is kind and misunderstood" and willing to help others in need.
So, how did Shkreli become the object of ridicule?
Another supporter said Shkreli's soft side was demonstrated when he adopted a cat from a shelter - named Trashy - that became a fixture on his livestreams.
