The BJP had won 325 of the 403 seats in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, wiping out both parties from the state's electoral map.
On the eve of the voting, Akhilesh Yadav shared pictures of his roadshow in Phulpur on Twitter and said the people were "restless to vote the cycle" and give a fitting reply to the BJP for its "disruptive politics", false promises, looting of banks and woes of farmers, traders and unemployed youths. According to the Election Commission, there 19.61 lakh voters in Phulpur parliamentary constituency, while there are 19.49 lakh voters in Gorakhpur.
Sources in BJP said the party is concerned more about Gorakhpur because let alone defeat, even a decline in margin of victory compared to 2014, could send adverse message for the party ahead of 2019 polls.
Around 65 companies of Central Forces - 33 to Gorakhpur and 32 to Phulpur - have been rushed for free and fair polls. Election Commission has also chose to webcast voting from 95 critical booths.

Referring to BSP's support to SP in the bypolls, Adityanath, who addressed four rallies in Gorakhpur Friday, said, "When the SP found that the tactic of fielding imported candidate is not working, it mounted elephant (BSP's poll symbol) on bicycle (SP's symbol)...that cycle has already dismantled". Kaushalendra Singh Patel is fighting the by-election from the BJP, Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel is fighting from SP and Manish Mishra is the Congress candidate.
Atique Ahmed, who once represented Phulpur in the Lok Sabha, is again contesting as an independent candidate. Phulpur has been represented in the past by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. By poll of both UP's Lok Sabha seats are important keeping in mind Lok Sabha elections going to hold next year, in 2019.
The ruling BJP did not only win both the seats in the 2014 general elections but also swept the state Assembly polls past year.
