Mother, stepfather accused of beating 10-year-old girl daily, tried to cover up her death
According to court records, the ten-year-old girl who was allegedly killed by her mother and stepfather in Stockton Springs suffered months of physical abuse.
The Sun Journal reported that the couple told police that they punished the girl by forcing her to kneel on a tiled floor where she was whipped anywhere between 10 and 15 times with a leather belt or struck with their bare hands. Carrillo told dispatchers that the girl was "somewhat breathing", according to a state police affidavit.
The parents would also hit Marissa with open hands and fists to her abdomen and sides while she was kneeling, and dealt additional blows to her face and forehead, according to court documents.
A state police affidavit indicates 33-year-old Sharon Carrillo and 51-year-old Julio Carrillo took turns beating her, once breaking a mop handle on her ribs.
Also included by Sharon Carrillo in the list of punishments inflicted on Marissa were long periods of isolation in a closet.
The Carillos are said to have told police that the beatings began last October, with things coming to a head when Marrissa stopped moving and began slurring her speech last Thursday or Friday.

They are said to have plotted to make Marrissa's death look like an accident, by claiming she had injured herself while playing in the basement. According to Julio Carillo, his wife accused her daughter of "faking", and subsequently beat her more.
On Sunday morning, Julio Carrillo carried Marissa's unresponsive body to the basement and knocked over chairs. Following instructions from the 911 operation, he moved her to the floor of the bedroom.
"Officers did not observe injury or behavior suggesting that Marissa or her siblings were in a risky or unhealthy environment", Bangor police said in a statement Thursday.
The Maine Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death a homicide on Monday, with the cause being battered child syndrome.
The Carrillos were already familiar to police after several previous reports of domestic violence.
