A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said officers were initially called to the area at 1.50pm following reports that a man was threatening people with a weapon.

Police said a 23-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of possessing a blade and assaulting a police officer and he remained in custody last night.

A witness said the attacker ran towards officers with a 3ft sword held "up in the air" before being detained on Upper Chorlton Road.

The officer has been released from hospital after suffering facial and shoulder injuries in the incident.

Reporting the comments of eye-witnesses to the attack, the Manchester Evening News quoted one who said: "When they took him down there were about four or five police officers on him".

At the time the abuse took place and the marriage was arranged, Maarib Al Hishmawi was 15-years-old. Maarib Al Hishmawi, 16, was found in mid-March after she was reported missing on January 30.

"He ran out of somebody's front garden and he's gone for the officers". I don't know if the officer made a successful tase.

He added: "You could see him still hitting back while he was on the floor".

"They sat him in the back of the van and a medic came to him, then an ambulance came". He said officers attempted to engage with the man but he lashed out at them.

He added that before he was arrested, the man appeared to be "out looking for trouble", and was shouting during the incident.

A 'Taser was deployed for the safety of everyone at the scene, ' he said.
