At the signing ceremony on Thursday at the White House that put the tariffs in motion in 15 days, Mr Trump did not specifically name Australia but he indicated a path would be created for "great partners and military allies" to sidestep America's new 25 per cent tariffs on steel imported into the U.S. and 10 per cent on aluminium.
US President Donald Trump has confirmed he and Malcolm Turnbull are working on an agreement to provide Australia an exemption from steel or aluminium tariffs.
South Australian political leaders will this week launch the final push of their campaigns, with federal politicians expected to join the last-minute grab for votes ahead of the March 17 state election.
Turnbull said the two leaders discussed the importance of a "fair and reciprocal" trade relationship between Australia and the U.S.
"I was very pleased the president was able to confirm that he would not have to impose tariffs on Australian steel and aluminum", Turnbull said.

This morning on ABC TV's Insiders, Trade Minister Steven Ciobo said the world faced "choppy waters" over trade and hinted that Australia may support World Trade Organisation action by other nations against the United States tariff plan, saying Australia would "practise what we preach on free trade".
"I'm not going to lecture anyone about what they should do", he said.
