Prosecutors to seek death penalty for Florida high school shooter

Prosecutors will seek to put Nikolas Cruz to death for carrying out last month's massacre at a Parkland, Florida, high school, they announced in court filings Tuesday.

Cruz was arrested shortly after committing the Valentine's Day killings and fleeing the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School campus among terrified students.

Cruz is scheduled for a formal arraignment Wednesday on a 34-count indictment.

In the documents, prosecutors call the mass shooting to which Cruz confessed "especially heinous, atrocious or cruel", as well as "cold, calculated and premeditated". Finkelstein said Cruz would likely plead guilty if prosecutors opt not to seek the death penalty.

Cruz's public defender has argued that he suffers from serious mental illness, noting that he will enter a guilty plea if prosecutors agree to not seek the death penalty. It is unclear what the defense intends to do in light of the prosecution's notice of intent.

The announcement came down Tuesday afternoon when they filed a Notice of Intent in his case.
