President Vladimir Putin says Russian Federation has developed a range of new nuclear weapons that he claims can't be intercepted by an enemy.

He officially unveiled a new hypersonic nuclear-capable ICBM called the RS-28 Sarmat and said it would be able to strike anywhere in the USA -adding that testing of the weapon is now complete.

"You have failed to contain Russian Federation".

Mr Putin used the annual address to lay out priorities for the fourth presidential term that he is expected to win easily in the March 18 election.

That assertion does little to change the long-standing nuclear standoff between the US and Russian Federation, which is rooted in deterrence and the reality that neither country would launch such weapons because doing so would mean mutual destruction.

On Thursday, Putin announced that one of those missiles, a new cruise missile would render existing missile defense systems obsolete and that its nuclear-powered engine would give it unlimited range. The US tried in the 1980s to create a space-based ballistic missile defense system called "Star Wars".

Putin said he wanted to increase employment and longevity as these are necessary to secure stable population growth in the next 10 years.

Putin said the new ICBM accelerates faster than its predecessor, making it harder for enemy to intercept it in its most vulnerable phase after the launch. It's extremely hard to hit a ballistic missile in flight, as they travel at over a dozen times the speed of sound. "Cruise missiles and hypersonic-glide vehicles don't follow predictable ballistic paths so we have to adapt to this emerging threat".

The Pentagon brushed off Putin's boast of developing "invincible" missiles, claiming the United States was fully prepared for anything that might come its way.

A USA official tells ABC News that the US has been monitoring Russia's work on a the new missile for a while.

All of the weapons are reportedly nuclear-powered, a feature that would significantly extend the range of the missiles.

He added, to applause, that names for the nuclear-powered cruise missile and the drone hadn't yet been chosen, and suggested that the Defence Ministry run a nationwide contest for the best names.

The president set a goal to cut poverty minimum in half in the next six years, saying the well-being of Russians and their families should be the top priority. He said the new weapons would help ensure global stability and draw a line under attempts to weaken Russian Federation. He also touched on improving the country's health care system.

Though he at one point called the weapons a "reliable guarantee of peace on Earth", Putin framed their development as a response to the U.S. "We don't know the exact specification but we're aware of their development", he said.

But what he didn't mention is that Russian Federation has been able to nuke the USA for decades, and that if Putin went through with it, it would likely be one of the last things he ever did.
