PV Sindhu in third round of All England Badminton Championship with a hard-fought win

In the more than one hour-long battle, Sindhu edged past Nitchaon Jindapol of Thailand 21-13, 13-21, 21-18. If he had won this match, Srikanth would have faced compatriot HS Prannoy in the next round. Srikanth was slow to react against Brice Leverdez in the opening round as well but the third-seeded Indian bounced back in the second game and maintained a healthy lead to draw level, winning the second game 21-15 to force a decider.

Srikanth could have set up an interesting all-Indian quarter-final with Prannoy but he was beaten 11-21, 21-15, 20-22 by World No 42 Huang Yuxiang of China. "Most probably, it would be (Nozomi) Okuhura or the Indonesian, so lets see who I play", Sindhu said after the match.

Sindhu now faces the possibility of taking on the victor of the second round clash between world champion Nozomi Okuhara and Indonesia's Fitriani in the quarters.

Sugiarto attempted to fight in the second game and to an extent, was successful too.

However, Sindhu's experience was enough to be the difference as she played her strokes with aura and personality, patiently waiting for the Thai to commit errors. Days after the Seoul chapter of their rivalry, the two shuttlers met once again in Japan where Okuhara ousted the Rio Olympic silver medalist in the second round with a straight-game win.

The unseeded Prannoy, who came into the tournament after recovering from foot warts, outwitted former world no 3 and 2014 world championship bronze medallist Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia 21-10 21-19 in a pre-quarterfinal match. Prannoy was quick enough to finish the opening game easily.

Trailing 13-16, Srikanth rained down winners at will to bag five points in a row and go up to 18-16. A bad judgement and two successive wide shots from Sindhu gave Jindapol seven game points and she sealed it with a smash to roar back into the contest.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are India's promising and rising men's doubles pair, however they had an uphill task in the second round against the world No.2 Danish pair of Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen. The India pair lost 16-21, 21-16, 21-23 in the contest which lasted more than an hour. Nonetheless, big-match-player Sindhu will be hoping to make it 5-5 against her nemesis and thereby inch closer towards becoming the first Indian woman to win the coveted All England title.

Later at night, the mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy was outclassed 6-21, 10-21 by the second seeds Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping.
