Rabada faces ban for rest of series as Proteas erode Australian total

Australia won the toss and chose to bat in the second Test against South Africa at St George's Park on Friday as attention focused on warring duo David Warner and Quinton de Kock.

Australia spin bowler Nathan Lyon was fined for bringing the game into disrepute after celebrating a wicket in the first test in Durban by intentionally dropping the ball on South Africa batsman AB de Villiers.

It was Rabada's eighth five-wicket haul in only his 28 Test match and his second against Australia. With his remaining ball in the over, Rabada had Pat Cummins caught behind to be on a hat-trick.

With Australia looking to shrug off a tough week of off-field scrutiny for both teams by calmly moving to 98/0 by the stroke of lunch time, it required a herculean effort by the South Africans bowlers to ultimately dismiss the visitors for 243.

It was a day of contrasts.

David Warner appeared to put the sledging dramas of the first test behind him, scoring 63 in his 98-run opening partnership with Cameron Bancroft.

The teams' captains and managers met with Crowe to clear the air on Thursday‚ but Philander credited some of the relative civility to extra vigilance by the umpires‚ Chris Gaffney and Kumar Dharmasena.

Rabada took three of his wickets in an over and removed Australian batsmen on the last ball before tea and first ball after it to suddenly turn the tide in the home team's favor with some fast reverse swing bowling.

Nigidi picked up the final two wickets but not before the tourists added 61 as Paine batted superbly with the tail to finish with 36 as the last man out.

The altercation between Warner and de Kock has certainly helped the cause as one can now expect even more fierceness from both the side in the matches to follow.

Ngidi, who replaced Morne Morkel in the only change in either side, took three for 51 while Vernon Philander bowled with superb control to take two for 25 in 18 overs. The day before the Port Elizabeth Test, social media posts, including one by a reporter (who is not working on this game) with the host broadcaster SuperSport shared photographs of fans making Williams' masks and of a songbook with lyrics containing vulgar and derogatory language.
