Rabada faces Level Two charge, could miss rest of series

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada faces a hearing on Saturday that could result in a ban from the third Test against Australia.

After getting Smith Out following a LBW shout, Rabada roared in celebration but failed to control his emotions as he approached Smith aggressively and brushed shoulders with the Aussie captain.

Smith went for the DRS and was quickly sent on his way as Hawkeye showed the ball to be crashing into the pegs.

Amla and Dean Elgar didn't look particularly comfortable after lunch, when Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Mitch Marsh produced challenging reverse-swing with the old ball. Last February he made what the ICC judged to be "avoidable contact" with Sri Lanka's Niroshan Dickwella during a one-day worldwide match. Rabada now has five demerit points against his name and if he is found guilty, he would be banned for two Test matches.

This year, Rabada added a fifth point to his name when he gave Shikhar Dhawan a send-off during an ODI at St George's Park last month.

Pat Cummins was the successful Australia bowler on the second morning when he bowled Rabada for his second wicket of the innings. Warner's and de Kock's confrontation wasn't the only heated moment in the opening test, which was characterized by an aggressive fielding display by Australia and a series of verbal exchanges between the teams. He then earned a another demerit point in July, when he swore at Ben Stokes after dismissing him at Lord's during the first Test between South Africa and England.

Demerit points remain on a players' record for a period of two years. Article 42.3.1 of the players' code of conduct cites "making inappropriate and deliberate contact with another player" as a level two offence, which carries a sanction of a fine and either three or four demerit points. If found guilty of such a charge, a minimum of three demerit points are applied.

It is the second time Crowe has been called into action during this series after he was forced to rule on the off-field altercation between Australia's David Warner and South Africa's Quinton de Kock. That would take Rabada to eight, which would mean he misses the rest of the Australia series.
