According to officials, personnel from the 74th Battalion of CRPF were ambushed after emerging from their camp to secure an under-construction road in the area.

"Maoists targeted an MPV [Mine Protected Vehicle] carrying 10 CRPF men in Sukma today".

Sukma Superintendent of Police had rushed to the spot with extra force and rescue operation had begun to safely evacuate the victims, he said.

"The encounter took place after the Maoists triggered an IED on an anti-landmine vehicle of the 212 CRPF Battalion's patrolling team was going from Kistaram to Palodi", special director general of police (anti-Naxal operations) DM Awasthi said.

The rebels used a lot of explosives to blow up the vehicle, a state police official said.

Doctors treating the wounded CRPF jawans in Raipur said that the jawans suffered injuries due to the IED blast and not due to any firing.

He took to twitter and wrote this, "My heartfelt condolences to the families of that person who lost their lives in Sukma blast".

India's home minister has described the attack as "distressing" and expressed sorrow over the killing of CRPF personnel. He bowed to each and every security personnel who attained martyrdom while serving the nation. "I spoke to DG @crpfindia regarding the Sukma incident and asked him to leave for Chhattisgarh", he tweeted.

Some jawans were also reported to be injured in the explosion, but there was no official confirmation yet, he said. In Chhattisgarh, the left-wing extremists have the presence in 16 of the 27 districts.
