Jaya Bachchan to be Samajwadi Party's Rajya Sabha Candidate From Uttar Pradesh
Samajwadi Party has declared actor Jaya Bachchan as their Rajya Sabha candidate from Uttar Pradesh.
The SP, which enjoyed a comfortable majority in the UP assembly till its rout at the hands of the BJP a year ago, is set to be the biggest loser in the March 23 Rajya Sabha elections.
The other parties, including BSP with 19 members, the Congress with 7, the Rashtriya Lok Dal and the NISHAD Party with one each, would be able to win the 10th seat together. However, Bachchan's third term in the Upper House comes to an end on April 3.
Bachchan is a three-time MP and was first elected to the Upper House by the Samajwadi Party in 2004 until March 2006. Then intermittently he was in the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and then he joined Samajwadi Party.

Speaking on this, Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh said, "Jaya Bachchan was consistently loyal to the Samajwadi Party, its system and hierarchy". According to reports, this was done to placate the faction led by SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav's uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav, who is said to be upset with Aggarwal for allegedly "colluding" with the BJP. She got a second term from June 2006 until July 2010. The Samajwadi party is yet to make an official announcement regard this.
However, SP faces the risk of losing that position, if the factionalism within the party threatens to divide votes. In that eventuality, the BJP will walk away with 9 of the 10 vacant seats.
The terms of the 58 Rajya Sabha members from 16 states expire in April and May.
Ambedkar is from Etawah and has been a legislator from Lakhna constituency in the district.
