British Gas Controversially Increases Its Energy Prices

Latest figures from Energy UK show more than 660,000 customers switched electricity suppliers last month, representing a 60% increase on the figure for February 2017.

February saw a record-breaking 660,000 customers switch to a different electricity supplier, which translates as almost 24,000 people switching per day, according to Energy UK.

It said that a trend towards switching providers was accelerating, but that as of the end of September 2017, around 57 per cent of customers were still on SVTs.

But Georgie Frost, consumer advocate for GoCompare Energy, said while it was good news, the rise in numbers of switchers still only represented a minority of United Kingdom households.

The data does not show exactly which companies gained or lost customers but shows nearly half the switches were between large suppliers, while nearly a quarter of switches were from larger firms to smaller suppliers.

Last month Centrica, which owns British Gas, said it was axing about 4,000 jobs, blaming intense competition and the government's energy price cap.

It said the "growing choice in the market" is reflected by customers switching to small and mid-tier suppliers, which saw a net gain of 130,556 or 20 per cent of all switches in February.

Confidence in energy switching is also high with 9 in 10 customers happy with the process according to the Energy Switch Guarantee.
